Things To Consider Before You Apply For A Credit Card With A Rewards Program

October 12, 2010 - 8:48 am

Consumers have learned a great deal in recent years regarding how they should handle their credit card accounts.  With a bigger push toward saving money and making responsible credit choices, many consumers want to get the most bang for their buck when using their credit card.  For those consumers who are interested in applying for rewards credit cards, there are a few things that should be considered first.  Here we look at some of the factors that will determine if your choice will truly be rewarding.

Do you need a rewards program?

Before you apply for any new credit card, you should think about how you will use the credit card and the impact it will have on your budget.  Ask yourself if you will actually use the credit card in a way that will earn you the rewards you seek.  For example, there is little reason to get a rewards card that offers airline miles if you do not fly frequently.  Rewards programs are designed to encourage account owners to use the card frequently.  If you are not going to meet the required conditions, you may want to consider another type of credit card account.

Fees associated with credit card rewards programs.

As credit card issuers adjust to the new rules and regulations governing the industry, changes are being made across the board.  Rewards programs often come with a higher annual fee or other fees that can prove costly for consumers who will not use the card to its utmost potential.  Simply applying for a credit card with a rewards program for the sake of having it, is not always a cost effective decision.

Learn the lingo.

Before you can compare rewards programs you must learn the lingo used by credit card companies.  It is important that each potential account holder understand exactly what the terms that are being used in the fine print mean.  Otherwise you may think you are getting a great deal when in reality you will never see the rewards advertised.

Read the terms.

This step is crucial in order to pick the best rewards program available.  You must carefully read all of the terms and conditions associated with a rewards program.  There are many people who benefit from rewards programs, however they are the individuals who did their homework in advance to ensure the card they choose was the right card for their unique needs.  You must not only weigh what rewards are available but what you must do in order to earn and receive these rewards.

Compare and save.

Once you have considered all of these factors, you can then begin to narrow down your choices by comparing the different credit cards and rewards programs available.  Each credit card and program is unique and finding the best one for your needs requires a bit of legwork.  Fortunately this is easily accomplished online where you can compare dozens of different cards, side-by-side to see which one will benefit you the most.
