Why Credit Card Rewards Programs Are Important To A Cards Overall Value

April 1, 2010 - 1:55 am

How much value do you get out of your credit cards? A low APR, promotional offers and flexible payment options are important factors that boost a credit card’s overall value, but there’s an often overlooked factor that can make using a credit card even more valuable. Credit card rewards enhance value by giving you cash back on every purchase, or points that can be redeemed for merchandise, services or gift cards depending on the credit card rewards program. Before filling out a credit application, look over the terms and see whether or not the card you are applying for also has a rewards program. If not, then it might be best to find a card with a rewards program that gives you something in return for using the card.

Credit card companies have different reward programs that can give you even more value to your card. By using your card to make every day purchases, pay bills, you can create a predictable and steady source of extra income. By estimating how much you spend a month using your credit card and by calculating the cash back or number of points you’d earn, you can set aside that extra cash or points when you need it. And, even more rewarding is the fact that there’s no need to do anything differently. All you need to do is to use your credit card as you normally would for purchases you make that are within your budget, and you won’t have to work for the extra income or benefits you receive.

A card may have a low APR which can make it useful when paying off purchases over time. Carrying a balance from statement to statement, but also factoring in credit card rewards that give you cash back or points simply for paying your card statement on-time, or giving you back interest that you paid on your card statement, are all benefits. This kind of reward suits your spending style and fits in with your financial habits, and gives you rewards without having to spend differently or alter the way you manage your finances.

Another consideration when valuing a credit card, is whether the rewards you earn on purchases or statement balances are worth more than the interest you may pay as determined by your card’s APR. Judging a credit card’s value by the APR, payment options and cards rewards program will help you determine how a credit card’s value is right for you. Before you fill out a credit card application, consider the credit card’s overall value by seeing the rewards program and other factors to determine whether the credit card is the best one for you and your needs.
