Which Credit Card is Right For You?

March 12, 2009 - 12:12 am

There are a lot of choices when it comes to credit cards. Some cards offer cash back rewards, while others give frequent flyer miles or discounts on travel. There are low limit credit cards, charge cards, retail credit cards, and even pre-paid credit cards. Some of these cards will even make donations to your favorite charity or deposit into a savings account each and every time you use the card. With so many choices, it can seem quite daunting when its time to apply for a credit card online.  Here are some things to consider before filling out online credit card applications so you can make the best decision:
Annual Percentage Rate (APR): The APR rate is perhaps the most important thing to look at when shopping for credit cards online.  Put simply, the lower the APR, the less interest you will pay. Some cards have adjustable APR, which will make your interest fluctuate. Most have a fixed APR, but that rate may be adjusted yearly.

Credit Limits: Credit cards with high limits sometimes have a lower APR rate, which can be good if you can afford to carry a balance. Credit cards with low limits may have a higher APR, but the consumer will be less likely to run up a large balance. Make the decision based on your income and spending habits. Remember, you may spend beyond your means if you have a high credit card limit.

Rebates and Rewards: If you are going to be using the credit card, you might as well get paid for it. Or at least get some rewards. There are hundreds of different options when it comes to reward programs for credit cards. If you are a philanthropist at heart, choose a card that will donate a portion of the proceeds to your favorite charity. If you want to start a savings account, but never quite seem to getting around to it, choose a credit card that will deposit the “change” from each transaction into your savings account (transactions are rounded up to the nearest dollar in most cases). Business travelers should choose a card with frequent flyer rewards or discounts on gasoline purchases, while families can choose a card that give discounts at grocery stores and restaurants. The possibilities are vast, but don’t choose a card based solely on the rewards.

Overall, you should get a credit card online that has a low rate, manageable spending limit, and perks or rewards that fit your lifestyle. There may not be a perfect credit card out there for you, but by searching for a credit card online, you can compare rates, rewards and other factors to find one that suits your needs.
