Business Owner Find Big Benefits with Travel Cards

August 30, 2010 - 9:00 am

For those who own a business that involves a lot of travel, you should know that applying for a credit card can be beneficial to your bottom line if you pick the right card. With so many credit cards to choose from these days, your goal should be to find the credit card that offers you incentives and rewards relating to travel so regular business trips become more than just another expense.

Travel credit cards are specifically tailored to meet the needs of a business. One perk is the reward points you own towards airline miles and other travel rewards are offer higher in amounts than cards meant for consumers. You can earn travel rewards points faster too.

How to Select the Right Travel Card

With such a variety of business rewards cards to choose from, selecting a travel card that is right for you may seem a little overwhelming. However, there are some specific things you should look for in a travel rewards credit card before committing to one.

  • APR: The annual percentage rate should be the first thing you check out with any credit card. Too high of an interest rate and you’ll be throwing good money out the window. Look at different cards and compare interest rates on each before making a choice. If a card is offering an introductory low or no interest rate period, make sure you clearly understand the percentage rate that will come into play when the promotional period has ended. Oftentimes, a really good interest rate during a promotion rises to an unreasonable rate. Make sure you are satisfied with the rate you’ll have for the year ahead.
  • Airline-Specific Cards: As an established business, you may be set in your ways and prefer to travel only on a select airline. If you have loyalties to an airline, the first place to start looking for a credit card is through the airline directly. Depending on your level of travel and the travel needs of your business, an airline-specific card may be your best option.
  • Generic Travel Cards: If you do not prefer one airline over another and just want the best prices on airline tickets, look for a generic travel card through a major credit card provider that offers incentives and rewards geared towards travel. These types of cards cater to the travel industry in general. Travel cards offer rewards not only on airline tickets but also hotel stays, gas, and other related expenses.

Travel credit cards are also efficient for businesses that must send employees on frequent trips. Each employee can have their own company card for travel purposes and company managers can regulate spending by setting limits and receiving detailed statements outlining expenses. A lot of different types of travel perks are being offered by a number of credit card companies, including directly through airlines. The key to finding the best card for your business is by comparing several cards and selecting the one that is best for the needs of your staff, your spending, and your business as a whole.
