How To Apply For A Credit Card With Bad Credit
October 2, 2009 - 1:43 amIf you have a bad credit score, you may find it incredibly difficult to get accepted when applying for a credit card. After all, that’s the point of the credit card approval process to weed out possible “risks” to the credit company. However, you might have had a few bad situations or you might have never really built up credit and in these cases, it can be very frustrating to get repeatedly denied. Even people with bad credit scores can find a card, though, if they’re willing to do a bit of searching and work to find one that suits them.
If you’re applying for a credit card alone, you often simply need to change where you’re looking – you may get denied often when applying online, but going to a small department store could have give you different results. Smaller stores are often more willing to approve credit card applications than large corporations, and they’re more likely to look the other way on your bad credit score. You could also try visiting your bank, especially if you’ve banked there for a long time. Many banks offer credit cards, and your history with a checking or savings account may be enough to get your application processed. You may have to get a card with a low limit and a high-interest rate, but that’s OK. By keeping a low balance or paying off your balance each month, you’ll gradually build your credit score up to the point where you can eventually get approval for a better card.
Remember that many credit applications allow a co-signer. If you have a trusted friend or family member with good credit, you can piggyback on their score to get a much better card than you’d get alone. It should go without saying that you’ve got more of a responsibility to keep your account in good condition with a co-signer, as they’re taking on a risk in putting their score behind your name. If you’re responsible, though, a co-signer can help you get a good credit card with a reasonable rate that will tide you over until you build enough credit to get a good card on your own merits.
It’s also helpful to get a copy of your credit report – which you’re legally entitled to before you start the process of applying for a credit card. Having the information in front of you that the credit company will be reviewing is a huge boost. This will allow you to identify and eliminate weaknesses in your application and improve your chances of being accepted.
Taking these steps, it’s possible, even for those with a bad credit score, to get a great credit card.
